I became a fan of Peter Gabriel back in high school. Believe it or not, my first introduction to him was playing some of his music in my church youth group’s worship band. Don’t ask me how that happened. But it totally did.
Solsbury Hill has a particular resonance for me because the language of a mythological being in the form of an eagle but playing the role of a father coming to someone who doesn’t fit in the world and taking them home reminds me of my former life as an evangelical christian. Back then, my ultimate hope was to arrive “home” one day in way not too dissimilar from the way this song describes it. I can remember one of the adults from my church even claiming that he was sure this song was about Jesus. I’m honestly not sure. It does sound like it could have been written from Jesus’ perspective, but I’ve never come across anything that would confirm this.
Solsbury Hill is probably the most well known song from his first album as a solo artist, but it wasn’t the single. Here he is looking back on album years later.
I’d be curious to know what your experience with this song has been. What does it bring up for you?
